Two teams with nothing to give up. One fighting for Champions League football, the other for top-flight survival. Old Trafford, 20:00 tonight.
Manchester United host Leeds United in what is, for both sides, one of the more important fixtures left on their calendars. United need the three points to stay firm in third place and keep the pressure off the automatic European spots. Leeds need them to avoid a relegation fight going down to the final day.
Man United’s position
Michael Carrick has transformed the mood at Old Trafford since his appointment. Seven wins, two draws and one defeat in his first ten games in charge. United sit third with 55 points from 31 games, seven clear of Chelsea in sixth. The top four is theirs to lose.
Bruno Fernandes is in the form of his career. Eight goals, 16 assists in the Premier League, with six direct goal contributions in his last five league games alone. He is the fulcrum of everything United do going forward.
The main concern is at the back. Harry Maguire is suspended after picking up a red card in the draw with Bournemouth last month. Matthijs de Ligt (back) and Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) are both out. Lisandro Martinez is expected to be available after returning from a calf injury. Diogo Dalot should recover from illness in time. Carrick’s defensive options are tighter than he would like.
Leeds’ position
Leeds come to Old Trafford in a difficult stretch. Winless in the league since early February, they sit 15th with 33 points — three above the bottom three. The equation is simple: they cannot afford to let the gap shrink.
The one caveat: they are in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on April 26. That gives some indication of the quality in this squad. Joe Rodon and Anton Stach are both out with ankle injuries picked up in cup action. Daniel James is also absent. But Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are expected back to the starting side, and Ao Tanaka is pushing for a place after good recent form.
In midfield, Ethan Ampadu is the key figure. His battle with Fernandes will likely decide the game’s tempo. If Ampadu can limit time and space for United’s Portuguese captain, Leeds have a chance.
Their away record, however, is stark. One win in 15 away league matches all season. That record must improve, and it must improve tonight, or the equation becomes unmanageable.
Assessment
United are at home, in form under Carrick, with a player in Fernandes who has been irresistible. Leeds’ injury problems are real and their away form is poor. The head-to-head history at Old Trafford points in one direction: United are unbeaten in their last 18 home league games against Leeds.
The match tonight is a three-pointer for United’s Champions League ambitions and a potential lifeline for Leeds. Expect United to control possession. Whether Leeds can nick something on the counter, as they have done before, remains the open question.
