Three goals. Two minutes and 47 seconds. And then a shutout for good measure.
The Carolina Hurricanes hit Montreal in the first period like a thunderstorm and never let up. Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal and Logan Stankoven all scored inside a 2:47 window before the first intermission, and Frederik Andersen stopped every shot he faced for a 4-0 win at Bell Centre on Wednesday night. Carolina now lead the Eastern Conference Final 3-1.
They are one win from the Stanley Cup Final. The last time they reached it was 2006. They won the Cup that year.
The first period settled this game. Aho, Staal and Stankoven found the net in such rapid succession that Montreal had no time to regroup before the scoreline had taken on a life of its own. Andrei Svechnikov’s empty-net goal late in the third only confirmed what the second period had already made clear: the Canadiens had no path back.
Andersen’s performance has become the defining story of Carolina’s playoff run. He made 18 saves on 18 shots for his third shutout of the 2026 playoffs, across 12 postseason appearances. His record now stands at 10-1. Goals-against average: 1.56. Save percentage: .927. No team has scored more than two goals against him in a single game this postseason. Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere each picked up two assists in the win, but the game was won in front of them by a goalkeeper who has been near-impenetrable.
The plus-15 goal differential Andersen carries into Game 5 is the best among all NHL goalies this postseason. That number does not emerge from soft opponents or a gentle schedule. It reflects a goaltender who has simply been better than everyone else.
For Montreal, Game 5 at PNC Arena in Raleigh on Friday is a final chance. Coming back from 3-1 down in the NHL is possible. But the Canadiens would need to win three straight games against a team that has not allowed more than two goals per outing all spring. The road is steep.
Carolina’s last Stanley Cup Final appearance was 2006, 20 years ago. They won the Cup that year. This roster has built towards a moment like this across several seasons. With one win to go, they are the clear favourites to get there.
