Brighton 3-0 Arsenal is the result nobody had pencilled in. The reigning champions arrived at the Amex on Saturday with four wins from four and left with their first defeat of the season, beaten by three goals to none.

Pascal Groß opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a shot that thumped off the base of the near post and in. Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time with a strike from 25 yards. Chema Andrés headed in from a corner in the 57th minute to make it three.
Mikel Arteta did not hide from it afterwards. “A very disappointing result and performance,” he said. “Full credit to Brighton.”
What the numbers say
The scoreline reads like a rout. The Opta data is closer than that. Arsenal had 11 shots and 1.58 expected goals; Brighton had 17 shots and 1.33 expected goals. Brighton finished with 40.3% of the possession and created four big chances to Arsenal’s two.
So Arsenal were not cut open every time they lost the ball. They were beaten by clinical finishing, three goals from 1.33 xG, and by a first half in which Brighton scored twice before the break.
The records fit the mood. This is Arsenal’s biggest Premier League defeat since May 2023, which was also against Brighton. It is their heaviest league defeat as reigning champions since October 1989. And Brighton’s 16 goals in their first five games are the most by any side at this stage since Manchester City’s 19 in 2022-23.
What it means for the table
After Saturday’s games Manchester City lead on 12 points from four games. Arsenal are second, also on 12 points from five, with a goal difference of +4. Brighton are third on 10 points with a goal difference of +11, two points behind Arsenal.
City play Sunderland on Sunday, and a win would put them three points clear. Arsenal’s title defence is not in trouble after one loss in five, but the margin for error is thinner than it was on Friday. Brighton, with 16 goals scored and five conceded, have put themselves into the top-three conversation early.

The international break comes next. Arsenal host Leeds United at the Emirates on Saturday 10 October. Brighton travel to Sunderland on the same day.
We do not read a season from one Saturday. What we can say is that the xG gap was small, the finishing gap was not, and Brighton took every chance that mattered.
