The finish
Pellitory (12/1) beat Tuco Salamanca (16/1), ridden by Marco Ghiani and trained by Ollie Sangster, by half a length. Flash Harry (28/1) was third for Paul Mulrennan and Clive Cox, with Fine Interview (12/1) fourth for James Doyle. There were 24 runners over six furlongs in a Class 2 heritage handicap.
Neither of the joint-favourites, Binhareer and Far Above Dream, was placed.
Why it mattered
The going decided a lot. Heavy rain overnight and on Saturday morning forced two course inspections and put the card back an hour, with 8.5mm falling in under an hour and standing water near the finish line. The meeting went ahead, and the ground went with it: heavy.
Pellitory is better known as a seven-furlong horse. This was his first win over six. O’Meara’s read was that the ground, and the horse’s stamina, would carry him. The horse stays seven and has run over a mile, and on heavy going that counted for more than raw speed at six.
For Tudhope it is a second Ayr Gold Cup, after Summerghand in 2022. “To win this race once was unbelievable, to win it twice is amazing,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier.”
What the result tells us
Two takeaways from the data. First, a 12/1 winner with both market leaders beaten is a reminder of how open a 24-runner heritage handicap is, especially when the ground turns testing overnight. Second, the winner’s form profile fits the conditions: a horse with proven stamina moving down in trip on heavy ground.
We could not find a confirmed next target for Pellitory in the reports we checked, so we will not guess at one.
Looking ahead
The Ayr Gold Cup meeting is over for this year. The main lesson for next year’s race is to check the going forecast before finalising a view. Stamina proved as useful as speed on Saturday.
