Almeraq’s Sprint Cup win was decided in one sharp move. Tom Marquand brought the 9/4 favourite from the rear at Haydock, reached the lead one furlong from home and pulled 4¼ lengths clear of Paborus. In a Group 1 sprint, that margin is the story.

The race was staged over 6f on ground officially described as soft, heavy in places. Eight runners went to post. Paborus moved into the lead two furlongs out and appeared to have found the right part of the race, but Almeraq was still travelling behind him. Once Marquand asked for the effort, the gap opened quickly.

Racing Post’s running comments describe smooth headway from under two furlongs out, followed by a decisive lead at the one-furlong marker. The Irish Field reached the same conclusion from the wider race: Paborus travelled well, then had no answer when Almeraq began to assert.

This was not a close finish dressed up by the result. The winner was clear. Paborus took second by half a length from Big Mojo, with James’s Delight fourth. Kind Of Blue finished fifth. The first two were separated by 4¼ lengths, and the first three by 4¾.

The ground question was answered

Soft conditions had made stamina part of the pre-race analysis. Almeraq answered that test more convincingly than any rival. He did not have to race near the speed or commit early. Marquand allowed the contest to form ahead of him, then brought the horse through when the leaders were already working.

That shape matters when assessing the performance. Paborus did plenty right. He travelled into the race and led at a meaningful point, but the winner went past him and continued to lengthen. Big Mojo pressed the pace before losing second late. Almeraq had both the speed to close and the strength to keep going.

The market had him favourite, but a favourite still has to handle the race placed in front of him. Here, the evidence was direct: 6f, Group 1, testing ground and a field containing last year’s winner. Almeraq beat them by daylight.

What the result means

There is no standings table in Flat racing, so the finishing order and race grade carry the weight. Almeraq leaves Haydock as a Group 1 winner this season. Paborus has added Group 1 runner-up form to his record, while Big Mojo’s third shows he remains competitive in this race even though he could not repeat last year’s success.

The winning performance also changes how future sprint markets may read Almeraq when the ground turns testing. Saturday provided current, top-level evidence that he can deliver his finishing speed on soft ground. That is more useful than a broad label about surface preference.

For Paborus, the result is strong form but also a clear measure of the gap he must close against this winner. He reached the right position and still finished more than four lengths behind. Big Mojo stayed on the podium, yet the race developed beyond him after the leaders entered the final furlong.

Almeraq did not merely win the Sprint Cup. He settled the race with enough room to remove most of the debate about who was best on the day. The next assignment will supply a different test. Haydock supplied a clear answer.
