Sun Goddess won the Cheveley Park Stakes by one length and made the drop back to six furlongs look like a test she could solve. Ryan Moore asked the 5/6 favourite for her effort inside the last two furlongs, she passed Libertango in the final furlong and pulled clear near the line.

The win was Sun Goddess’s third Group 1 success of the campaign. She arrived at Newmarket after taking the Moyglare Stud Stakes over seven furlongs, so this result adds something different to her record: top-level speed over six furlongs on good to firm ground.

A strong pace and a late answer

Snowing and Moonrise helped set a solid early pace across the Rowley Mile. Sun Goddess and Senorita Bonita raced behind them, while Libertango was held up before making progress on the far side.

Libertango moved into the contest first and briefly led inside the final furlong. Sun Goddess was already under pressure, but she kept responding for Moore. Once she reached Libertango, she went away to win by a length.

Alwaysanangel took third, another length and a half behind Libertango. Moonrise was fourth, Senorita Bonita fifth and Snowing sixth. All six runners were weighed in.

The winning time was 1 minute 9.08 seconds. That number needs the race conditions around it, but Sporting Life’s Timeform review also found that the Cheveley Park was run 19lb quicker on time than the Middle Park over the same course and distance later on the card.

What the result means

The simplest reading is also the strongest: Sun Goddess now has three Group 1 wins in one campaign. IrishRacing.com reported that the success gave Aidan O’Brien a seventh Cheveley Park Stakes, with Moore again responsible for the ride.

This was not a case of a favourite controlling a weak pace from the front. Sun Goddess had to chase a strong tempo, quicken under pressure and pass a rival who had built momentum from the rear. Her final furlong separated her from the field.

Libertango strengthened her own form with second place. She finished ahead of Alwaysanangel and the other Group 1 winner in the field, Senorita Bonita. The runner-up did not win, but the way she travelled into contention and briefly led gives her connections a sound performance to build on.

Looking ahead without guessing

Sporting Life reported that the Fillies’ Mile and the Breeders’ Cup are under consideration for Sun Goddess. Neither should be treated as a confirmed target until connections make the call.

The two options would ask different questions. The Fillies’ Mile would extend her to a mile, while a Breeders’ Cup assignment would introduce travel and a fresh race shape. Newmarket has already answered the immediate question about six furlongs.

That distinction matters for traders. A big performance can improve a horse’s profile without settling every future test. Sun Goddess has supplied firm evidence of class and range. The next distance, field and surface still need their own assessment.
