World Cup B 9

Chelsea 6-3 Leeds looked like a mismatch heading the wrong way at half-time. Leeds led 2-0 at Stamford Bridge through Tarik Muharemovic and Brenden Aaronson, and had controlled the opening 47 minutes of their Carabao Cup third-round tie. Then Chelsea scored six goals in 41 second-half minutes to win 6-3, one of the more dramatic turnarounds the competition has produced in years.

Xabi Alonso made all four of his substitutions at the break: Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James. Every attacking change paid off immediately. Palmer converted a contested penalty in the 53rd minute, then scored again two minutes later to make it 2-2. Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead for the first time in the 60th minute, and Danny Welbeck made it 4-2 five minutes after that.

Leeds pulled one back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 75th minute, but Chelsea had the last word twice more. Valentin Barco scored his first goal for the club in the 80th minute, and Welbeck added his second, and Chelsea’s sixth, deep into stoppage time.

Key moments

Cole Palmer took Player of the Match honours for his two goals, but Morgan Rogers did the damage without scoring at all. Introduced at half-time alongside Palmer, Neto and James, Rogers set up four of Chelsea’s six goals in under 45 minutes on the pitch. Leeds manager Daniel Farke disputed the penalty decision that started the turnaround, arguing it shifted a game his side had led comfortably for an hour. There were no red cards, and Leeds’ two-goal cushion lasted barely six minutes into the second half before Chelsea’s response began.

What it means

Chelsea advance to the Carabao Cup fourth round. Leeds are out of the competition. Neither result changes the bigger picture in the Premier League, where both clubs are three games into the season. Chelsea sit fourth with two wins from three matches and a goal difference of plus one. Leeds are ninth, level on games played but with one win, one draw and one defeat, a goal difference of plus three and four points.

For Chelsea, the win extends a strong start under Alonso, even if conceding two first-half goals to a newly promoted side will raise questions about early-game focus. For Leeds, cup elimination is a minor setback next to the larger task of consolidating their return to the Premier League, where their underlying numbers, a goal difference of plus three from three games, suggest more competitiveness than Wednesday’s collapse implies.

Looking ahead

Chelsea return to league business on Saturday 12 September, hosting Hull City at Stamford Bridge. Leeds host Newcastle United at Elland Road on Friday 14 September, a tougher test that will say more about their season than a cup exit does.
