Chester B 1

The Ladbrokes Chester Cup has been run since 1824. Originally called the Tradesmen’s Cup, it has become one of the most competitive staying handicaps on the British Flat calendar. On Friday 8 May 2026, a field of 21 runners goes to post over 2m2f140y on the Roodee: the longest flat race distance most of these horses will have been asked to run this season.

This year’s entry was record-breaking. Eighty-six horses were put in by their connections, surpassing the previous high of 56 set back in 1998. From that initial interest, 21 have been confirmed for the race. It is a maximum-field scenario, and it sets up as one of the more competitive renewals in recent years.

Chester’s unique demands

The Chester Cup’s character is shaped entirely by the Roodee. The tight, flat oval means there is no room for horses that are sluggish into position or need wide berths to show their best. Front-runners and those happy to race close to the pace hold a structural advantage on this track. The draw matters too: 14 of the last 23 winners came from stalls 6 or lower. At 2m2f140y, the distance is long enough to theoretically allow a wide draw to recover, but history says the low numbers dominate.

Stamina is non-negotiable. This is a staying handicap, not a middle-distance race with a sprint finish. Horses that have proven they stay the trip, either over this distance or close to it, are the ones worth focusing on.

Joseph O’Brien’s strong hand

The Irishman sends in three runners: Galileo Dame (9/1 joint-favourite at time of ante-post), Puturhandstogether (8/1 at time of ante-post), and Leinster. The yard, operating for JP McManus, has targeted the Chester Cup as a clear goal.

Galileo Dame (OR 93, 8st 11lb) is the more straightforward of the two leading market fancies from the yard. Her recent second at Navan over 1m6f on the flat was a proper performance, and she faces only a 3lb rise for that effort. She has also run at Cheltenham in hurdles company at the Festival, which shows her physical durability and fitness at this stage of the season. Whether she is proven over 2m2f140y is a question mark, but her form suggests a horse at least approaching her best.

Puturhandstogether (OR 92, 8st 10lb) has two flat wins from seven starts and has placed on five occasions. He won at the Curragh in September 2025 and ran at Cheltenham in March 2026 in the BetMGM Cup, finishing down the field. That Cheltenham run was over hurdles and may be forgiven in a flat context. Like Galileo Dame, he represents the kind of dual-purpose profile Joseph O’Brien and McManus have used to good effect in this type of race. The question is whether the Chester Cup distance is within his compass.

Leinster (OR 105, 9st 9lb, Ryan Moore) carries the yard’s biggest weight but gets the best jockey booking in the race. The form figures of 4419-45 suggest a horse that finds a way of being beaten, but the Ryan Moore booking in a race of this nature deserves respect.

Alsakib: the highest-rated horse in the field

Donald McCain takes over training of Alsakib (OR 108), having purchased the horse for 100,000gns in October 2025 from Andrew Balding. Alsakib won the Group 3 Silver Cup at York in 2024 and is the highest official rating in the field by some margin. McCain has won the Chester Cup twice before using dual-purpose horses: Overturn in 2011, Ile De Re in 2012. He has used hurdles races as part of the prep, with Alsakib winning at Musselburgh in March 2026. The trainer clearly has a plan.

The concern with Alsakib is whether the switch from hurdles back to flat, combined with a top weight of 9st 12lb, leaves him exposed. He carries 4lb or more than most of the field. In a handicap this competitive, that weight gap matters.

Spirit Mixer and the Chester specialists

Andrew Balding runs three horses here, and the most interesting on Chester form alone is Spirit Mixer (OR 96, 9st, Rob Hornby). Spirit Mixer has four course wins at Chester, including back-to-back victories in the Watergate Cup at the track. The form figures of 5714-38 suggest a horse that does not always fire. The most recent run saw him finish eighth. But this is his track. He has shown what he can do here repeatedly. Any horse with four wins at the same course in a race of this distance deserves a prominent place in your thinking.

Berkshire Sundance (OR 96, 9st, Oisin Murphy) won at Lingfield over 1m7f169y in January 2026. That stamina test at Lingfield is relevant here, and Murphy is a top-class booking. The form figures (81-01116) show a horse that has won four of his six starts in his most recent run sequence.

Alphonse Le Grande: the proven stayer

The A J Martin-trained Alphonse Le Grande (OR 90, 8st 8lb) is the horse in this field with the most relevant stamina credentials. He won the Chester Plate over 2m2f at this course in 2024, then went on to win the Cesarewitch Handicap over 2m2f at Newmarket. He knows both the track and the trip. The form figures of 8587-07 in his last six runs suggest his form has regressed since that peak, and the question of whether he can recapture that level is real. But a horse that has won both the Chester Plate and the Cesarewitch at this trip cannot simply be dismissed.

Moon Over Miami (OR 93, 8st 11lb, Hector Crouch / Ralph Beckett) ran 5th in the Chester Plate last year over the same course and distance. Beckett sends him here from a yard that understands staying handicaps. The form figure of 5461-55 in recent runs includes a win. Worth checking the full form profile once updates are available.

Betting view

Joseph O’Brien’s two market leaders, Galileo Dame and Puturhandstogether, head the betting at the time of writing. The yard’s record in targeting big staying handicaps with lightly raced dual-purpose types is worth respecting. Leinster, with Ryan Moore, adds a third O’Brien string to the bow.

Alsakib carries the highest rating but the biggest weight, having switched from hurdles prep. Spirit Mixer’s four course wins make him a natural interest in a race run over his favourite track.

Live odds for the confirmed field were not available at time of writing. All prices mentioned are ante-post market positions from before declarations. Race-day prices will reflect draw positions once announced.

In a 21-runner field over this trip, the draw will be critical. Horses allocated low stalls (6 and under) gain a structural advantage at Chester that is hard to overcome in a large staying handicap.

Conclusion

The 2026 Ladbrokes Chester Cup has the size and quality to justify the record entry numbers. Three runners from Joseph O’Brien head the market, with Alsakib the most highly rated. But in a 21-runner field at Chester, form is only part of the story. The draw will shape the race, course specialists like Spirit Mixer and Alphonse Le Grande demand respect, and the jockey bookings, particularly Moore on Leinster and Murphy on Berkshire Sundance, are worth tracking.

Multiple outcomes are possible. This is a handicap at the top of its class, and any of eight or nine runners could reasonably win.
