The British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday (14:00 BST) is, in most years, a race about finding Classic candidates who have not yet been found. This year, it is a race about confirming one who already has been.
Saxon Street, trained by John and Thady Gosden and ridden by Benoit De La Sayette, arrives unbeaten from two starts. His most recent run, a 2½-length defeat of the field in the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom, earned him the “leading Derby hope” label from the racecard. The Epsom Derby is on 6 June. Today’s run, over 1 mile 3 furlongs 44 yards on good ground, is set up as the final confirmatory piece.
The favourite in context
Saxon Street carries 9-5 and draws stall 3 of 5. His form figure reads 1-1. Two runs, two wins. The Blue Riband Trial was over the same Epsom straight that feeds into the Derby, the track bias alone makes it a relevant piece of form for what comes next.
What the racecard notes as “leading Derby hope” is not just marketing language. The Gosden operation does not send horses to Goodwood for Listed races unless there is a specific purpose. For Saxon Street, the purpose is a third win and a clean bill of health two weeks out from Epsom.
The risk of being a warm favourite in a five-runner field is that there is almost nowhere to hide. If Del Maro or Golden Story takes the race to him from the front, Saxon Street’s inexperience over a longer trip could be tested. He has not faced a test like that yet.
The challengers
Del Maro (Tom Marquand, Charlie Appleby, 9-2, draw 5) is the most interesting opponent on form. Fourth in the Chester Vase over a similar distance, staying 12 furlongs with comfort and “acting on any ground.” The Chester Vase has a reasonable Classic record. A horse who stays 12 furlongs and acts on any surface is not without a chance in a small field at Goodwood. Marquand is one of the more accomplished Classic-trial jockeys in the country.
Golden Story (P-L Jamin, Karl Burke, 9-2, draw 2) finished third in the Dee Stakes at Chester over 10 furlongs. The racecard note — “stays 10f, may need 12f” — is cautiously optimistic. Today’s distance at 1m3f44y sits between what Golden Story has won at and what they might improve over. Burke has an eye for placing horses at the right moment.
Command The Stars (H Crouch, George Scott, 9-5, draw 1) has mixed form: the racecard notes a flat run at Chester in handicap company and suggests the horse is “suited by 7f.” A horse whose preferred trip is half the distance of today’s race is not an obvious competitor here. Oratorical (Saffie Osborne, D Loughnane, 9-2, draw 4) is described as “effective at 7-8f; out of depth here.” The racecard is explicit. Against a favourite with Classic credentials, a solid third alternative in Del Maro, and a decent second challenger in Golden Story, Oratorical’s participation appears to complete the field rather than challenge for the result.
The race shape
With five runners over just under 1m4f on good ground at Goodwood, the race is unlikely to be particularly tactical. The key jockeys (De La Sayette on Saxon Street, Marquand on Del Maro) are capable of riding to a plan. If Marquand sets out to challenge Saxon Street’s pace, the favourite’s response will be informative.
Outlook
Saxon Street enters as the clearest favourite and the horse with the most to prove for purposes beyond this race. Del Maro is the legitimate danger — a proven stayer, a top jockey, and a Derby-trial background that makes the distance no concern. Golden Story is interesting if the trip brings improvement.
