Evening Saigon (16/1), trained by H Al Jehani for the Qatari-backed operation, settled in stall 10 in a field of 28 before running on strongly to beat Stratusnine by a head in the 15:35 Heritage Handicap over six furlongs. Mitbaahy was third, Completely Random fourth, Toca Madera fifth. The pre-race market leader Sondad (9/2) was not in the frame.
It was Wathnan’s seventh winner of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. In a single week. From five days of competitive flat racing at one of the sport’s premium meetings.
How the race was run
Evening Saigon broke from stall 10 of 28, a mid-draw position that offered neither a clear advantage nor a significant penalty in a six-furlong straight-course handicap. Sprint handicaps at Goodwood demand pace placement and a clear run at the furlong marker. In a 28-runner field that stretches the width of the straight course, the number of horses with an unobstructed path to the finish is always limited.
James Doyle, riding his fourth winner of the festival, picked the correct moment to ask Evening Saigon to go. The horse responded. In a race where the market’s choice (Sondad at 9/2) never threatened the frame, that response was the difference between a 16/1 shock and a routine result.
The winning margin of a head is close. But the manner of the finish, drawing away from a hard-ridden Stratusnine in the final 50 yards, suggests Evening Saigon had more to give.
What Wathnan’s week tells you
Seven winners from one British flat festival is not a statistical anomaly. It is a statement of operational depth.
Wathnan have been one of the most active new ownership presences in British racing since entering the market. Their approach, a broad string, multiple trainers, strategic handicap targeting, is now producing results at the level that matters: Group races, Heritage Handicaps, premium festivals.
The Stewards’ Cup is the standout result of their Goodwood week by prize money and profile. A 16/1 winner of a 28-runner Heritage Handicap is the most improbable type of win. It is also the most attention-grabbing, which is likely not lost on an operation building its British presence.
James Doyle’s four winners from the same meeting are equally worth noting. His alignment with Wathnan’s British operation has been a feature of 2026, and his Goodwood form was close to faultless this week.
What comes next for Evening Saigon
The handicapper will have noted this result. A revised mark is almost certain following a 16/1 victory at this level. Whether that closes the door on future handicap opportunities or moves Evening Saigon towards pattern races will depend on connections’ plans.
The autumn sprint programme offers natural targets. The Nunthorpe Stakes at York (Group 1, 5 furlongs) in August is a slight shortening in trip. The British Champions Sprint at Ascot in October (Group 1, 6 furlongs) matches the winning distance exactly. These are not confirmed entries; they are the logical places to look for a horse that has just proved itself at the highest level of sprint handicapping.
The Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot next June is worth marking in the diary, too, if the mark allows. It is the natural long-term target for a sprinter of this profile.
Festival footnote: Crowley retires
Glorious Goodwood 2026 will be remembered for two things beyond the results: Wathnan’s dominance and the retirement of Jim Crowley from riding.
Crowley, champion jockey in Britain in 2016 and a stable rider of considerable distinction, chose the Goodwood festival as the stage to conclude his career in the saddle. It is one of the sport’s better stages. The Sussex Downs, the packed grandstands, the heat of a summer festival: Crowley could have picked worse.
His record speaks for itself. A championship title, a long association with some of racing’s most powerful yards, and a consistency in the saddle that spanned the better part of two decades. The retirement of a jockey of this standing leaves a gap that is not easily filled.
Racing moves on quickly. But Goodwood 2026 is the right place to have finished.
