There is a first time for everything in World Cup football. On Monday night in Philadelphia, lightning over the stadium forced a two-hour, 15-minute suspension at half-time. No World Cup match had ever been delayed by weather in the 96-year history of the tournament.
When the players came back out, Kylian Mbappé scored within nine minutes.
France 3-0 Iraq. Les Bleus are through to the Round of 32 with a game to spare.
The Goals
France took the lead on 14 minutes. Michael Olise found Mbappé in space outside the box, and France’s captain caught the ball cleanly with his left foot. A fizzing drive that Ahmed Basil, in the Iraq goal, had no chance of stopping.
The match then came to a halt it could not have scripted. Lightning over the stadium at half-time forced the first weather suspension in World Cup history — two hours and 15 minutes in the Philadelphia holding rooms. France came back out and picked up exactly where they had left off.
Nine minutes after the restart, Mbappé had his second. Iraq defender Zaid Tahseen’s pass back to the goalkeeper was badly misjudged. Dembélé intercepted, composed himself, and rolled it to Mbappé at the far post. Tap-in, 54 minutes, game over.
Dembélé finished the job himself in the 66th minute. Another Olise assist, this time a low cross into the box. Dembélé met it and finished into the bottom corner. It was his first goal at a major international tournament, across 19 appearances in World Cups and European Championships combined. A long wait, ended in a rain-soaked quarter-final city on a Monday night.
The Records
Mbappé’s brace took his career World Cup total to 16 goals, placing him joint second on the all-time scoring chart. He hit that figure on his 100th cap for France. At 27 years old and with the group stage barely done, the numbers will keep moving.
The match itself enters the record books for a different reason. Two hours and 15 minutes of weather delay at half-time. It has never happened before at a World Cup. France emerged from that delay with a goal inside nine minutes, which tells you most of what you need to know about their mentality here.
What This Means
France are through. Six points from two games, the Round of 32 confirmed. Didier Deschamps can rotate his squad for MD3 without the pressure of needing a result. The knockout stage is already the objective.
Group I after two rounds: Norway lead on goal difference with six points, France second on six points. Both are through. One matchday remains to separate them at the top.
Iraq are eliminated. Two matches, two defeats, no points. Their World Cup 2026 ends in Philadelphia.
Looking Ahead
France go into MD3 with everything to play for in terms of group seeding. For the knockout draw, whether they finish first or second in Group I matters. Norway will have something to say about that.
For Iraq, the tournament is over.
