France’s xG of 3.17 against Sweden’s 0.67 makes the hierarchy clear. Sweden finished the match with fewer than three-quarters of one expected goal. They had no reliable route to goal across 90 minutes. France created chances at a rate that suggests their forward line was operating at somewhere below full capacity.
Sweden are out. Their earliest World Cup exit since 1990. They qualified from a competitive European group and showed up with organisation, but in the knockout stage they were simply outclassed.
What it means
France move into the Round of 16 and will face Paraguay in Philadelphia on 4 July. Paraguay beat Germany on penalties in their own Round of 32 match. They are a well-organised side who defend deep, absorb pressure and live off the counter. France will know this is a different kind of test.
Mbappé will be the focus going into that game. Eighteen World Cup goals. Level with the greatest player the game has produced. He has scored in every knockout match this tournament. Paraguay will need to stop him. That is far easier to plan for than it is to execute.
The broader picture: France produce goals easily, generate high xG consistently, and have not yet shown signs of being stretched at the back. The path to the final is open. Whether they take it depends on how they handle sides built specifically to frustrate them.
