Germany Deliver a Demolition Job: But the Night Belongs to Curaçao

Germany opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 7-1 thrashing of Curaçao at Houston Stadium on June 14. The result puts Julian Nagelsmann’s side level on three points with Ivory Coast at the top of Group E after Matchday 1. On paper it was the statement win Germany needed. On the pitch, the defining image was a Curaçao player sprinting towards the corner flag after scoring a goal their nation will never forget.

Curaçao, a Caribbean island nation with a population of 160,000, had never scored at a FIFA World Cup before June 14, 2026. They did it here. Livano Comenencia put the ball in the net on 21 minutes, briefly making it 1-1, and in doing so became part of World Cup history. The smallest nation ever to score at the tournament. That fact will outlast the scoreline.

How Germany Built the Scoreline

Germany had the lead inside six minutes. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring early, and Nagelsmann’s side looked sharp from the off. Comenencia’s equaliser on 21 minutes was the only moment the Germans were pegged back. The response was decisive.

Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead on 38 minutes. Kai Havertz added a penalty just before half-time, converted on 45+5. Germany went in at the break 3-1 up and never looked back.

Jamal Musiala made it four just after the restart, scoring on 47 minutes. Nathaniel Brown, who finished with a goal and an assist, made it five on 68 minutes. Denis Undav, introduced from the bench, added a goal and two assists before Havertz wrapped up his brace with the seventh on 88 minutes.

Joshua Kimmich supplied two assists across the 90. Undav’s impact from the bench was the tactical talking point: two assists and a goal in limited minutes is the kind of contribution that changes a coach’s thinking about his substitutes.

What It Means for Group E

Germany sit top of Group E on three points, but they share that position with Ivory Coast, who beat Ecuador 1-0 in the other Matchday 1 fixture. The group is already taking shape.

The Ivory Coast result matters. They are unbeaten, organised, and will arrive for the Germany fixture on June 20 with confidence from that opening win. Germany’s goal difference is obviously superior, but the June 20 match is already the group decider in all but name. Whoever wins that game controls their own destiny.

Curaçao and Ecuador both have zero points after Matchday 1. When they meet on June 20, it is a genuine six-pointer. Ecuador will be the favourites, but Curaçao showed in the first half against Germany that they can compete for periods. Comenencia’s goal was not a fluke.

Looking Ahead

For Germany, the question is whether Nagelsmann keeps faith with the team that delivered this result or makes changes ahead of the Ivory Coast match. Undav’s performance off the bench will have given him options. Havertz’s brace confirmed he is in form at the right moment.

For Curaçao, the World Cup dream is still mathematically alive. They need a result against Ecuador. They have history on their side now: they scored at a World Cup. That is not nothing. For a nation of 160,000 people, it is everything.

Group E comes to a head on June 20. Germany vs Ivory Coast is the match that will define who tops the group. That fixture is worth watching closely.
