Carolina Hurricanes are one win from their first Stanley Cup Final since 2006. They host the Montreal Canadiens tonight at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, puck drop 8pm ET.
The series stands 3-1 to Carolina. A Hurricanes win sends them to the Stanley Cup Final to face the Vegas Golden Knights, who swept the Colorado Avalanche 4-0 in the Western Conference Final.
The Series So Far
Game 1 went to Montreal. The Canadiens put four goals in the first period and won 6-2. Seth Jarvis scored early for Carolina, but the Canadiens’ first-period burst overwhelmed them. It was a statement.
Games 2 through 4 told a different story. Nikolaj Ehlers provided the overtime winner in Game 2 to make it 3-2 to the Canadiens, levelling the series at 1-1. Carolina then took control. Andrei Svechnikov scored the overtime winner in Game 3 (3-2) to put the Hurricanes ahead. Game 4 was definitive: three goals inside 2:46 in the first period, a 4-0 final scoreline, and Frederik Andersen’s third playoff shutout of the season.
The Andersen Factor
Andersen is the story of Carolina’s postseason. His Game 4 performance brought his playoff record to 10-1, with a 1.56 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and a plus-15 goal differential. He has three shutouts this postseason.
Montreal need to solve him tonight. In Games 3 and 4 combined, they managed two goals across 120 minutes of hockey. Their Game 1 output (six goals) showed what they are capable of at their best. The question is whether they can find that level again in a hostile Raleigh building.
What Montreal Must Do
Ehlers, who scored twice in Game 2 including the overtime winner, is Montreal’s most dangerous weapon in this series. If the Canadiens can establish speed in the first period and avoid falling behind early, they give themselves a fighting chance.
But Lenovo Center will be as loud as it gets tonight. Carolina have not lost at home in this series, and a crowd expecting history has a way of making the early atmosphere intense for visiting teams.
The Lean
Carolina are the better team across this series. Andersen’s form gives them a structural advantage that is difficult to overcome in a single game. The most likely outcome is a Hurricanes win and a first Stanley Cup Final in 20 years.
For Montreal to force a Game 6, they need Ehlers at his best, an early goal, and Andersen to have an off night. All three simultaneously.
