Patrick Kane Makes History: Sole 4th Place on the All-Time US-Born Goals List

Monday night at Little Caesars Arena, Patrick Kane scored twice as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Calgary Flames 5–2. The result was routine. What Kane did around it was not.

His two goals moved him to 504 career NHL goals, past Joe Mullen’s total of 502,  to take sole possession of fourth place on the all-time list of goals scored by US-born NHL players. He had been tied with Mullen. Now the record is his alone.

The List Kane Has Entered

The four names above the rest of American-born NHL scorers form a short, rarefied group:

  1. Mike Modano — 561 goals
  2. Keith Tkachuk — 538 goals
  3. Jeremy Roenick — 513 goals
  4. Patrick Kane — 504 goals (sole possession, 16 March 2026)

Mullen, now 5th, held that fourth position for decades. Kane has displaced him.

19 Consecutive 40-Point Seasons

The goals record is the headline. But the context behind it reveals the consistency that defines Kane’s career.

Monday night also confirmed that Kane has now accumulated 40 or more points in 19 consecutive NHL seasons. That is not a statistic that speaks to a single brilliant night,  it is a measure of sustained elite production maintained across nearly two decades of professional hockey, through multiple teams, coaching changes, playoff runs, and career evolution.

For reference: 40 points in a season requires consistent contribution across an 82-game schedule. Doing it 19 years in a row places Kane in company with the greatest producers the sport has generated.

The Red Wings Context

Kane joined Detroit in 2024-25, bringing one of the sport’s most decorated careers to a franchise rebuilding toward competitiveness. His individual output has continued at a level that younger teammates are playing alongside,  not just watching,  as they develop.

The milestone moment arrived in a game Detroit won convincingly. Kane’s goals were not consolation markers in a losing effort; they came in a 5–2 win that had value for the Red Wings’ push within the Eastern Conference standings picture.

What the Record Means

The US-born goals record is a measure that sits slightly outside the mainstream statistical conversation, which tends to focus on all-time lists regardless of nationality. Modano holds the US-born record at 561. Kane is now 58 goals back.

But Kane’s standing in the broader game is not diminished by the framing. A first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famer, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, a Hart Trophy winner, a World Junior and World Championship gold medallist,  Kane’s career achievements are comprehensive. The 504th goal is a milestone moment within a career full of them.

The Data Picture

From a betting and performance modelling perspective, Kane’s continued production at this stage of his career represents an interesting anomaly. Scorers of his type,  creative, possession-oriented, dependent on skating and technique,  typically see sharper production declines earlier than power forwards. Kane’s sustained output challenges that model.

It also reflects well on Detroit’s system usage: Kane is being deployed in situations that give him the opportunity to contribute, rather than being managed toward retirement.
