Chelsea landed the first punch after 77 seconds. Arsenal supplied the longer answer.
The champions recovered to win 2-1 at the Emirates, with Kai Havertz equalising in the 25th minute and Martin Odegaard completing the turnaround five minutes after half-time. The result leaves Arsenal with nine points from three Premier League matches and ends Chelsea’s own perfect start.
Arsenal controlled the consequence of the early goal
An early concession can drag a match away from the original plan. Arsenal did not allow that to happen. They needed 23 minutes to draw level, but the equaliser arrived without the game becoming a sequence of forced attacks.
Havertz supplied the first goal against his former club. He then played a decisive part in the second by allowing a low cross to run through to Odegaard, who finished from close range. The move reflected an attack reading the same space rather than three individuals chasing a response.
That matters more than the raw comeback label. Arsenal did not merely score twice after falling behind. They changed the match while keeping enough structure to protect the lead after the 50th minute.
Chelsea’s attack remains live, but the defensive return was costly
Chelsea’s goal after 77 seconds was evidence of immediate threat. They also pushed Arsenal into a genuine contest rather than spending the afternoon pinned back.
The cost was at the other end. Chelsea have now conceded seven goals in three league matches. That number should not be stretched into a season-long conclusion, but it is the clearest current concern for a side that remains fourth with six points.
The sequence of Arsenal’s winner also deserves attention. Havertz’s dummy created the opening, but the space available to Odegaard inside the area was the larger defensive problem. Against top opponents, one lost reference can be enough.
What it means for the table
Arsenal finish Matchweek 3 second, level with Manchester City on nine points and +5 goal difference. The table ordering leaves City first, but both clubs have won every league match.
Chelsea are fourth with six points. The defeat does not remove them from the early leading group, and three matches remain too small a sample for a final title judgment. It does show the present gap: three points to Arsenal and six more goals conceded.
The next useful test is how both teams respond. Arsenal go to Sunderland on 12 September. Chelsea host Hull on the same day. One result established the early hierarchy between them. The next round tests whether it lasts.
