Epsom B 1

The declarations are in. Twelve fillies will line up for the 2026 Betfred Oaks at Epsom on Friday June 5 at 16:00 BST. Aidan O’Brien has five of them in the race. And the biggest conversation before the first horse walks around the paddock is which one Ryan Moore will ride.

Until that decision is public, bookmakers cannot separate the two market leaders. Once it is confirmed, the betting will shift sharply in one direction.

The race

The Betfred Oaks is a Group 1 Classic for three-year-old fillies over 1 mile 4 furlongs. It is the most demanding test of a middle-distance filly in the British racing calendar. The Epsom track adds complications that no other course can replicate: the descent into Tattenham Corner, the camber through the turn, the uphill finish. The combination tests stamina, balance, and composure in roughly equal measure. Fillies who struggle at a mile on flat, galloping tracks can find Epsom an entirely different problem.

Going at the time of declarations on June 3 was described as good, good to soft in places, with a GoingStick reading of 6.6. Conditions are expected to improve toward race day. If the ground firms to close to good by Friday, the going debate largely resolves itself.

The Moore question: Precise or Amelia Earhart?

Aidan O’Brien sends five runners to post. The two that bookmakers cannot separate are Precise and Amelia Earhart.

Precise is the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner, with an RPR of 129. Her mile form is among the best in the Classic generation and she arrives here on the back of that Classic win. The step up to 1m4f is the question. Not every Guineas winner finds the Oaks trip, and the Epsom gradients add an extra test beyond raw stamina. O’Brien was reportedly uncertain about running her on soft ground, though the current going description is broadly acceptable. Whether Moore’s mount choice is influenced by the going forecast will be one of the stories of Thursday afternoon.

Amelia Earhart won the Listed Cheshire Oaks, a traditional Oaks trial, over 1m3.5f. Her form over a longer trip is more established than Precise’s, and the Cheshire Oaks is one of the most informative prep races for this race. She entered the market as the 7/4 favourite but that position will move once the jockey situation is resolved.

One of these two gets Ryan Moore. The other gets a different booking from the Ballydoyle team. Historically, when O’Brien has to split between two serious Oaks candidates, the one Moore rides tends to attract the heavier market support. That pattern alone is reason to watch Thursday’s jockey announcement closely.

Legacy Link and the case for the Gosden challenger

John and Thady Gosden’s Legacy Link gives backers a strong single alternative to the O’Brien runners. She won the Musidora Stakes at York in May with an RPR of 123. The Musidora is one of the most respected Classic trials for fillies and York’s galloping track rewards stamina in a way that sets up the Oaks trip well. Colin Keane takes the ride.

At 3/1 in the market before declarations, Legacy Link is the clearest opposition choice. The Gosdens have trained Oaks winners before, and their approach of preparing a filly through a single strong trial then pointing her at Epsom is the kind of patient preparation that delivers results at the highest level.

Other contenders

Thundering On (Joseph O’Brien) won a Group 3 at Navan in April. Sired by Frankel, the pedigree carries a Class 1 ceiling. A step from Group 3 company to the Oaks is a large one, but Joseph O’Brien trains progressive fillies with confidence and this runner deserves respect on an upward curve.

Venetian Lace (Charlie Johnston, William Buick) finished third in the Newmarket Guineas. Buick’s booking gives her commercial interest and Johnston has a strong record at major Flat meetings. Third in a Classic trial is not an obvious profile for an Oaks winner, but it shows she can compete at this level.

A La Prochaine (Ralph Beckett, James Doyle) was third in the Cheshire Oaks behind Amelia Earhart. Running on from that form to improve at Epsom is possible; the Cheshire Oaks form is demonstrably strong given the winner is likely to start favourite here.

Ralph Beckett also runs K Sarra and On Message, completing a three-runner team. Beckett is a trainer who maximises fillies at the top level and his multiple entries suggest confidence that the distance and track will suit his team.

The field in full

12 declared runners: Precise, Amelia Earhart, Cameo, Beautify, Sugar Island (all Aidan O’Brien), Legacy Link (Gosden/Keane), Venetian Lace (Johnston/Buick), Thundering On (Joseph O’Brien), Prizeland (Balding), A La Prochaine (Beckett/Doyle), K Sarra (Beckett), On Message (Beckett).

All runners carry 9st 2lb. Prize fund: £625,000.

What to watch for before race day

The Moore ride announcement is the pre-race event. Once confirmed, the market will give a clearer read on where the weight of money goes. Then watch the going updates. A GoingStick below 6.0 on race morning would bring Precise’s participation back into question. Above 7.0 would suit the field broadly.

Legacy Link remains the most straightforward pick for those who want to oppose the Ballydoyle market leader on form grounds. Her prep has been clean, the Musidora form is strong, and the trainer has delivered at this level before.
