Manchester United beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford on Monday evening, and the numbers they leave behind tell you everything you need to know about where this team is heading.
Fernandes now has 19 Premier League assists this season. Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry share the all-time record at 20. He has four matches to equal it.
The goals
Casemiro headed in at the back post after 12 minutes. It was his ninth Premier League goal of the season and his 11th headed goal in red since joining the club in August 2022. At 34 years old, in what is almost certainly his final weeks as a United player, the Brazilian midfielder is still producing when it matters.

Mathias Jensen pulled one back for Brentford in the second half, a long-range effort that gave Old Trafford some anxious moments. But United held the lead comfortably enough.

The context matters here. In October, United were 15th. Ruben Amorim had just arrived. The club was searching for an identity and his system was producing more confusion than clarity. A top-five finish looked ambitious. Now it looks almost certain.

The Casemiro footnote
He is leaving this summer. Reports suggest the club will not offer a contract extension. Given that context, his form across the last eight league matches has been remarkable: four goals in eight games, a FotMob rating of 8.9 on Monday night, and a back-post header that opened the scoring at exactly the right moment.
The argument that he is too slow for Amorim’s press-heavy system has been undermined week by week. He has adapted. He has produced. The back-post runs are still there, the headers are still landing, and the reading of the play in tight spaces remains sharp.
When he leaves, United will miss something that does not appear on a transfer sheet.
Sesko’s arrival as a Premier League striker

He scores the goals he is supposed to score. He does not overcomplicate. He finds the right position and finishes. For a club that spent several seasons cycling through strikers who could not consistently deliver a double-figure tally, this is what they were missing.
His goal against Brentford was efficient rather than spectacular: the ball laid across, a clean finish, the goalkeeper with no chance. That pattern has repeated itself throughout the season. He is in the box. The chance arrives. He takes it.
The Fernandes record chase
One assist. That is the gap between Bruno Fernandes and the Premier League single-season assist record. Four games to close it.
De Bruyne set his record in a dominant Manchester City team. Henry set his at Arsenal’s peak. If Fernandes reaches 20 assists in a United team that was 15th in October and is finishing third, that achievement deserves proper framing.
It would not be the record of a player surrounded by elite teammates in a dominant side. It would be the record of a player who dragged a squad above its ceiling, created chances for strikers still finding their feet, and produced output that the raw numbers barely capture.
Brentford’s position
Ninth place, 48 points. Keith Andrews has had a difficult first full season as Brentford head coach, but Monday’s display showed what this side can do at their best. Jensen’s long-range effort was a reminder that they have quality throughout the squad.
United had to hold on in the final stages. They did. At this point in the season, managing tight wins is a skill as important as creating them.
The model view
United’s expected goals across their last six matches show a team creating high-quality opportunities at a higher rate than at any point since November. The defensive structure is working. In 75 minutes against Brentford, Keith Andrews’s side produced one shot on target.
