Canada’s World Cup ended on the Fourth of July, and it was not close.
Morocco beat them 3-0 in Houston. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice, the second of a brace set up by Achraf Hakimi’s delivery from a free-kick. Rahimi, coming from the bench, added a third in stoppage time. Brahim Diaz picked up the assist — his fourth of the tournament and an African record for World Cup assists.
Canada have been eliminated. They did something no Canadian side had ever done before by reaching the Round of 16. They then became the first co-host nation in World Cup history to go out at that stage. The two things sit next to each other in the record books now, and the second one will be the one people remember.
The match
The first half was quiet. Canada had the ball at times and Morocco were not dominant in the opening 45 minutes. Then Morocco changed gear.
Ounahi was central to both goals. His first came from a Hakimi free-kick delivery, the kind of set-piece delivery that has been a weapon throughout this tournament. His second underlined Morocco’s quality in the final third. Rahimi sealed it from the bench, arriving late to finish what the starters had built.
Canada offered little in response. This was not a match decided by fine margins — Morocco were the better side by the time it mattered and the scoreline reflected that.
The historic footnote
Canada qualified for this World Cup as a co-host, alongside the United States and Mexico. Reaching the Round of 16 was already history — Canada had never done it before. Alphonso Davies had returned from injury during the group stage, a moment that stirred genuine excitement about what a fit, fully available Canadian side could produce.
It did not happen. 3-0 is a clear answer to the question of whether Canada were ready for the knockout stages. They were not.
The co-host status made the expectation higher than it might otherwise have been. No home or shared-host nation had previously exited at the Round of 16. Canada are the first.
Morocco’s case
Morocco went to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the first Arab or African nation to reach that stage of the tournament. They went out to France, who they face in… this tournament’s bracket. Their run at this World Cup carries the weight of what they did four years ago.
They came to Houston and took it apart. Three goals, a comprehensive performance in the second half, and an African record for Brahim Diaz’s assists. They do not look like a side that peaked in 2022. They look like a side that is building.
Morocco advance to the quarter-finals. Their opponent will be confirmed from the remaining Round of 16 fixtures.
The numbers
Canada had never won a Round of 16 match at a World Cup. They will not have the chance again until at least 2030.
Morocco: 3 goals, 0 conceded in this fixture. Brahim Diaz: 4 assists at this World Cup — no African player has recorded more in a single tournament.
Morocco go on. Canada go home.
