World Cup B 24

A tight, absorbing evening in Istanbul ended level. Fenerbahçe and Lyon played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League playoff tie, leaving the contest wide open for the return at Groupama Stadium on 26 August.

Lyon controlled large spells of the first half and converted their pressure into a lead just before the break, but Fenerbahçe came back quickly after the interval and levelled inside two minutes of the second half. From that point the match settled into a tense, even contest that neither side could break. The aggregate stands at 1-1. Everything is to play for in France.

How It Happened

The opening 40 minutes belonged to Lyon. They showed the composure of a team that had already beaten Sparta Prague 4-2 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round, and their movement and control in the first half put Fenerbahçe under sustained pressure. The breakthrough came from Loïs Openda, who found space in the Fenerbahçe box and finished cleanly to put the visitors ahead in the 40th minute.

Fenerbahçe needed a response and produced one almost immediately. Mason Greenwood, one of the home side’s main attacking threats on the night, levelled in the 47th minute to restore parity and lift the Şükrü Saracoğlu. The stadium erupted. The game’s momentum shifted sharply and neither team could find the decisive moment from there.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy throughout. Ederson made four saves for Fenerbahçe, Dominik Greif matched him with four saves at the other end. Shots on goal were level at five apiece. Big chances created were level too: one for each side. Possession finished 52-48 in favour of Fenerbahçe. As balanced a contest as the scoreline suggests.

What It Means

For Fenerbahçe, a 1-1 draw at home is a result they can work with, but it comes with significant pressure. The club last appeared in the UCL league phase in 2008/09. That absence runs to nearly two decades and the weight of expectation attached to this tie is real in Istanbul. A home draw keeps them alive, but they now need to go to Lyon and get a result to keep that hope alive.

For Lyon, the outcome is not ideal. They had the better of the first half and took the lead, but leave Istanbul without the away win that would have put them firmly in the driving seat. They go into the second leg at home, at the Groupama Stadium, knowing that a win or a draw on aggregate puts them through to the UCL league phase for the first time since 2019/20.

One important note: there is no away goal advantage in this tie. UEFA abolished the away goals rule from the 2021-22 season. The aggregate is simply 1-1. If the second leg finishes level after 90 minutes in Lyon, the tie goes to extra time and then, if needed, penalties. Nothing from the Istanbul result is worth more than face value on aggregate.

The Decider

26 August. Groupama Stadium, Lyon. The aggregate is 1-1.

Lyon are at home, in front of their own supporters, needing only a draw on aggregate to progress. Fenerbahçe need something from France: a win by any margin takes them through; a draw after 90 minutes means extra time. It is a genuine open tie, and on the evidence of the first leg it should produce another close contest.

For Fenerbahçe, the prize is the UCL league phase for the first time in nearly two decades. For Lyon, it is a return to Europe’s top competition after a seven-year absence. One of them ends the wait on 26 August.
