Kosovo v Ireland ended 1-0 and was decided in the 83rd minute, but the danger had been building for much longer. Vedat Muriqi reacted first after Ermal Krasniqi’s shot hit the crossbar, heading in from close range to settle the UEFA Nations League opener in Pristina.
For the Republic of Ireland, the late timing made the defeat painful. The pattern of the match made it hard to dispute.
Kosovo keep coming
Ireland survived two goal-line clearances in the first half. Jayson Molumby stopped one Muriqi effort, Dara O’Shea blocked another Kosovo chance, and Caoimhín Kelleher clawed away a looping header that was heading towards the top corner.
Heimir Hallgrímsson had selected a back five, with James Abankwah making his first competitive start and Troy Parrott operating as the lone forward. The shape gave Ireland bodies behind the ball, but it did not give them enough control.
Chiedozie Ogbene put their best first-half opening over the bar after Abankwah drove into the Kosovo area. Parrott later directed a header at goalkeeper Arijanet Muric. Those moments were isolated.
Kosovo kept finding Muriqi and kept asking Ireland to defend their box. Eventually, the pressure told.
The 83rd-minute break
Krasniqi’s effort struck the bar and bounced into a crowded six-yard area. Muriqi was quickest, nodding the rebound over the line. Ireland appealed during the move, but the goal stood.
The Kosovo captain had already forced Kelleher into several saves. His goal was not a surprise intervention. It was the finish to the game’s clearest attacking pattern.
Kosovo could have added a second on the break. Ireland could not produce a late reply.
What it means in Group B3
Austria lead Group B3 after beating Israel 3-1. Kosovo are second, also on three points. The Republic of Ireland sit third on zero, ahead of Israel on goal difference.
The group is only one match old, so this is not a verdict on Ireland’s campaign. It does change the pressure around Sunday’s next game. Kosovo travel to Austria for a meeting between the opening winners. Ireland face Israel with both teams looking for their first point.
The route out of League B runs through the top two positions. Kosovo have already beaten one of the sides likely to compete with them for that ground. Ireland have given away the chance to start with an away point and must now find a response.
Ireland need more than survival
There were defensive actions to admire. Kelleher made important saves, and Ireland stayed level until the final seven minutes. The issue is what happened at the other end.
A team can absorb pressure away from home if it carries a threat on the counterattack or from set pieces. Ireland rarely made Kosovo turn and defend. That left every clearance feeling temporary.
Hallgrímsson now has a short turnaround and a clear brief. Ireland need more possession with purpose, more support around Parrott and more than occasional entries into the opposition box.
Kosovo earned this win by sustaining their pressure. Ireland’s task is to make sure one difficult night does not become the shape of their group campaign.
