Anthony Elanga gave Sweden a foothold at 4-1 in the 59th minute, racing clear of the Dutch defence and finishing well. For a brief spell it looked like the game might tighten up. Then Crysencio Summerville scored in the dying minutes to make it five. The contest, such as it was, had been settled long before the final whistle.
What the numbers say
Brobbey’s double from a first-start position is the detail worth marking. He was not in the starting lineup for the Netherlands’ opening game. Given his chance in game two, he scored twice before the 17th minute. At 23, that kind of response to a big occasion carries weight.
Gakpo, meanwhile, contributed a goal and an assist in the first half, then scored twice after the break. He and Brobbey accounted for four of the five goals between them. Add Dumfries supplying crosses for three of those goals from right back, and this Dutch side is generating numbers from multiple positions simultaneously.
What it means for Group F
Netherlands are top of Group F with four points from two games. Japan are second on four. Sweden have one, Tunisia have none. With one game remaining for each side, the Dutch are virtually certain of progress to the knockout stages.
Sweden remain in a reasonable position. Three points from two games, with a final group fixture to come. Their place is not guaranteed, but the standings give them a platform to work from.
