In last week’s column we highlighted Coco Gauff in Auckland and she duly obliged with her third title. Elsewhere Sabalenka powered her way to the title in Adelaide and on the men’s side Djokovic claimed his 34th straight victory in Australia but he was made to work hard in the final by an inspired Seb Korda who actually had a championship point but couldn’t maintain the high level needed to beat the Serb.
Looking at week two we must note that players who did well in week one may not put it all in if they are entered this week, as we have the first Slam of the season on the horizon and historically players who do well in the opening week produce 83% of all Australian Open quarter-finalists. On the flip side we have players who either weren’t entered in week one or got knocked out early and they wont mind going a few rounds and getting match practice under their belts.
ATP Auckland looks to be playing fast and it can get very windy there at times so the big hitters need some control, the top seeds include Ruud & Norrie and I cant see either of them wanting to go deep this week, historically this tournament is good for the underdog and I like the look of young Ben Shelton who won three challenger tournaments at the backend of last season. Look for a price of 20 plus.
Over the water in Australia we have ATP Adelaide for the second week running, the entries aren’t as strong as last week and as expected there have been a lot of withdrawals from the initial entry list. This could be another good opportunity for a youngster to bag a title and Nakashima & Draper catch the eye.
5 of the Top WTA rated have entered
On the woman’s side we have the second week in Adelaide where 5 of the top 12 are entered, so who’s going to be motivated to put it all in this week when there are far bigger fish to fry next week? Working this out is pure guesswork and looking at the entry list there are also a few women in the top 15-25 who could conceivably go on a run next week as well. This tournament is best watched in my opinion.
Finally, we move over to the apple island Hobart for its historic tournament. Looking at past winners we see a lot of big hitters on the trophy, with a lot of them winning the title on their way to bigger things, Rybakina, Kenin, Mugaruza, Kvitova, and Clijsters all won here before claiming their Slams. So, were looking for a promising power player on the rise as the potential winner and only Marie Bouzkova fits the bill as I don’t really think the young Chinese girl Xinyu Wang is quite ready to win a title at this level yet. Also, don’t discount former winners Mertens or Kenin who both like conditions on the other side of the world.
