What Is the York Dante Festival?
Ask any serious follower of British flat racing which spring meeting carries the most weight for the Classics picture, and the answer is almost always the same: York.
The Dante Festival runs over three days from Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 May 2026 at York Racecourse, and it is one of the most important appointments on the flat calendar. With 21 races across the three days and several Group events, it provides a detailed view of Classic hopefuls at a point in the season when form is beginning to crystallise.
York itself is a demanding track. The straight six-furlong course sorts out sprinters in a hurry. The mile-and-a-quarter distance of the feature races rewards horses with both class and stamina. Connections choose their targets at York carefully, which is part of what makes the meeting so informative.
The festival takes its name from the Dante Stakes, the race that has historically produced Derby winners. But there is far more to these three days than one race.

Each day at the Dante Festival has its own character, its own feature Group race, and its own role in the bigger Classic narrative.
Wednesday 13 May: Minster Stakes Day
The opening day is sprint day at York. The headline act is the Go Local Stores Minster Stakes, a Group 2 over six furlongs on the straight course. The race was known as the Duke of York Stakes until a rebrand ratified in February 2026; the prize fund has been increased to £165,000 for this year’s running.
The confirmed field of 17 runners includes Big Mojo (trained by Michael Appleby, ridden by Tom Marquand), a Group 1-winning sprinter who won the Sprint Cup at Haydock and is making his seasonal debut here. Appleby has been clear that the ground needs to be decent for his horse to run; assuming conditions hold, he is the one to beat among the confirmed entries.
Day one also features the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes, a Group 3 over one mile two furlongs for three-year-old fillies, which has a confirmed field of seven runners. The Musidora is an Oaks trial: the winner or a close runner-up here will line up at Epsom on 6 June. Friendly Soul (trained by John and Thady Gosden, ridden by Kieran Shoemark) arrives unbeaten after winning the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket. The Gosden yard has won the Musidora eight times in total, and Friendly Soul has the profile of a Classic filly. Ralph Beckett supplies two runners in Classical Song (Rossa Ryan) and La Pasionaria (Hector Crouch), both of whom also hold entries for Epsom. Andrew Balding’s Secret Satire, ridden by Oisin Murphy, rounds out a competitive seven.
Thursday 14 May: Dante Stakes Day
The festival centrepiece. The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes is a Group 2 over one mile two furlongs for three-year-olds, with a prize fund of £180,000. Twelve runners are declared. This race has produced 11 Epsom Derby winners since 1958, making it the most significant Derby trial of the spring season.
The confirmed field is genuinely strong. Aidan O’Brien has four runners: Christmas Day (Ballysax Stakes winner at Leopardstown), Italy, Action, and Amadeus Mozart. Charlie Appleby runs Al Zanati, King’s Trail, and Maho Bay. John and Thady Gosden supply three in Saxon Street, Wise Prince, and Guildmaster. William Haggas has Morshdi (Feilden Stakes winner at Newmarket), with Tom Marquand in the saddle, and Andrew Balding runs Item with Colin Keane, seeking a second Dante win for the yard following their 2023 success.
The going at York is currently described as Good, ideal conditions for this race.
Thursday also features the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes, a Group 2 over one mile two furlongs for four-year-old fillies and mares: another high-quality race that fills out the card.
Friday 15 May: Yorkshire Cup Day
The final day shifts the focus to staying horses. The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is a Group 2 over one mile six furlongs for horses aged four and above, with a prize fund of £180,000. It is one of the principal trials for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June.
The full confirmed runners and riders for the Yorkshire Cup will be published by York Racecourse and the Racing Post ahead of the meeting. Ante-post interest has focused on Aidan O’Brien’s stayers, with Illinois and Scandinavia (the 2025 Goodwood Cup and St Leger winner) among the names linked to the race in form guides.
The Dante Stakes: A Proven Derby Trial
The Dante Stakes has a remarkable record. Of the race’s winners since 1958, eleven have gone on to claim the Epsom Derby. Desert Crown won the Dante and the Derby in 2022. Economics took the 2024 running. The form book shows that a Dante winner with Derby stamina and class can make the step up.
The 2026 Derby is set for Saturday 6 June at Epsom. That is three weeks after the Dante.
