Arsenal B 3

Twenty years. That is how long Arsenal have waited to reach the Champions League final. They do not have to wait any longer.

Bukayo Saka scored in the 44th minute at the Emirates Stadium to give Arsenal a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, sealing a 2-1 aggregate victory. They are in the Budapest final on 30 May. The first leg had finished 1-1 in Madrid. Arsenal did what they needed to do.

The goal

The moment came just before half-time. Leandro Trossard drove a low shot toward goal and Jan Oblak got down to save it. Saka, following the play, was first to the rebound and did not miss. One chance. One goal. That was enough.

It is the kind of moment that decides European ties: not spectacular, but ruthlessly taken. Saka converted the most important finish of his Arsenal career, and the Emirates erupted.

What the numbers say

Arsenal finished with 53% possession, 13 shots and 1.58 xG. Atletico had 9 shots, 2 on target and 0.53 xG. Those figures tell the story of the night. Atletico did not create enough. Arsenal defended with organisation throughout the second half, gave nothing away and saw the tie out without drama. No red cards. No VAR incidents. Controlled.

Julian Alvarez, Atletico’s most dangerous player, had scored 10 UCL goals in 2025-26,  the most by any Atletico player in a single Champions League campaign. He did not find a way through on Tuesday. Arsenal’s defensive shape made sure of that.

What it means

Arsenal last reached a Champions League final in 2006. In Paris, against Barcelona, Sol Campbell scored to give them the lead. Then Samuel Eto’o equalised and Juliano Belletti won it. Arsenal went down to ten men and could not hold on.

That was 20 years ago. Now they are back, as Premier League leaders with 76 points from 35 games, and in only their second Champions League final in the club’s history.

They got here the right way. They won all eight UCL league phase matches this season, the first club ever to collect the maximum 24 points in that format. They beat Atletico Madrid over two legs without conceding more than once. A team that has shown they can perform in Europe’s biggest games all season long did not stop at the semi-final.

The Budapest final on 30 May will be against either Bayern Munich or PSG. PSG hold a 5-4 lead from the first leg, with the second leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. One of them will join Arsenal in Budapest. Arsenal will be ready for either.

Looking ahead

Before Budapest, Arsenal have the Premier League title run-in. They lead the table. West Ham is next in the league. Then the European final of their generation.

For Atletico, the focus turns to La Liga. They sit 4th with 57 points from 31 games and the fight for European qualification continues. Julian Alvarez’s campaign was extraordinary. The result, ultimately, was not what they came for.

Arsenal are in the final. The data said they should be here. The result confirmed it.
