Manchester City’s title ambitions depend on their ability to win their game in hand, and Wednesday’s trip to Turf Moor provides the opportunity. Beat Burnley, and City draw level with Premier League leaders Arsenal on 70 points. Don’t, and Arsenal retain a three-point lead going into the weekend.
The math is straightforward. The context, on the face of it, is also straightforward: Burnley are 19th on 20 points with four wins from 33 games. Man City are second, with Erling Haaland in form following Sunday’s decisive winner against Arsenal at the Etihad.
Across 23 Premier League meetings between these sides since 2009, Man City have won 19, Burnley one, and three have been drawn. The historical record makes this about as close to a certainty as football offers.
City’s title push
Three points on Wednesday would level the table with Arsenal before Saturday’s fixtures. Arsenal face Newcastle at the Emirates on April 25. If City win on Wednesday, Arsenal will kick off that match needing a win just to stay level.
The pressure on City is not an absence of pressure — a slip here, in a game they are expected to control, would be felt, but they have shown all season they handle these fixtures. Their 20-7-5 record reflects a side that wins when it is supposed to win.
Burnley’s position
Burnley sit 19th on 20 points with five games remaining. They need 12 or more points to reach safety. That means winning four from five against opponents who include Man City and other mid-to-upper-table sides. Given they have four wins all season, it is not a realistic outcome.
Against City, a compact defensive shape is the realistic aim. Burnley have eight draws across the season, suggesting they can make games tight when the occasion demands. But City’s quality in the final third, and Haaland’s specific ability to punish spaces that open late in games, is a different proposition to mid-table sides who have drawn against Burnley.
Verdict
This is City’s game to win. They travel as clear favourites, on the back of a big result against Arsenal, with a clear objective at the top of the table. Burnley will make it difficult. City’s class should see them through.
