Lawrence Shankland’s penalty in the 19th minute gave Rangers everything they needed to believe. A goal in the first 20 minutes at Ibrox, the aggregate drawn level at 2-2, and a full 70 minutes to find a second.
They never found it. Nik Prelec scored for Jagiellonia Bialystok on 65 minutes, the tie tilted back to 3-2 on aggregate, and Rangers could not respond. The final whistle confirmed their exit from the Europa League. The Conference League play-offs are what comes next.
The Match
Shankland stepped up from the penalty spot in the 19th minute and converted. Aggregate: 2-2. The Ibrox atmosphere, the early goal, and the tie in the balance combined for a moment Rangers needed to build from.
For 46 minutes, they kept the deficit level. A second goal did not come. In the 65th minute, Prelec scored for the Polish champions to restore their aggregate lead. From 3-2 down with 25 minutes left, Rangers needed two goals. At Ibrox, in a European qualifying tie, against a side that had outplayed them in the first leg, they got none.

The Context
Jagiellonia are the Ekstraklasa champions and are not a soft European draw. But Rangers, at home, with everything at stake, were expected to find the result they needed.
The first leg in Poland produced a 2-1 defeat. That put the pressure on the Ibrox second leg from the start. Shankland made it competitive again. Prelec closed it down. Derek McInnes will now face questions about why Rangers could not score a second goal at home when the tie demanded it.
What Comes Next
Rangers drop to the Conference League play-off round, where FK Jablonec of the Czech Republic await next week. Advancing there would at least secure group-stage European football at some level. Failing would end the continental campaign entirely.
It is not the level Rangers had been targeting. The Conference League carries smaller revenue and less prestige than the Europa League. Winning that tie, though, remains a minimum expectation.
The Bigger Picture
Both Scottish clubs with European ambitions entered Thursday in difficult positions. Hearts, facing Benfica with a 6-1 first-leg deficit, lost 7-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw at Tynecastle. Rangers, needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit at Ibrox, drew 1-1 and went out 3-2 on aggregate.
European football will continue for both clubs. Just not at the level they had hoped for.
