A five-game lead disappeared

Zheng beats Swiatek is the result line, but it does not capture the scale of the recovery. Iga Swiatek led 5-0 in the first set and appeared close to a routine start. Qinwen Zheng then won seven games in a row, took the set 7-5 and completed a 7-5, 6-3 victory in one hour and 56 minutes.

The scoreline is notable on its own. The route to it makes this one of the clearest momentum swings of the tournament. Zheng entered the main draw through qualifying after shoulder surgery had pushed her ranking down to No. 121. Swiatek arrived as the No. 8 seed and a former US Open champion.

That ranking gap did not decide the match. Once Zheng found depth and made Swiatek play one more ball, the opening set stopped following its early pattern.

Seven straight games changed the contest

Swiatek’s 5-0 advantage gave her room to absorb one poor service game. What followed was not one loose game. Zheng claimed seven in succession.

The sequence did two things. It removed Swiatek’s lead and forced her to begin the second set knowing that a position of control had gone. Swiatek finished with 28 unforced errors, a figure that helps explain why the match moved away from her once Zheng established a steadier rhythm.

Zheng did not need a deciding set. She backed up the comeback with a 6-3 second set, closing the match before Swiatek could rebuild the pressure she had applied in the opening 20 minutes.

There was no injury claim and no external incident required to explain the result. The official account is simpler: Zheng recovered, Swiatek’s timing broke down, and the qualifier sustained the better level through the finish.

What the result means

Zheng is into her third US Open quarter-final and will face No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina. A place in the last four is now the next target in a run that began before the main draw.

That starting point matters. At world No. 121, Zheng did not have the protection of a seed or direct route through the draw. Every round has carried elimination pressure. Beating Swiatek after trailing 5-0 shows how far her match resilience has taken her in New York, but Rybakina presents a fresh test and the previous comeback gives no guarantee about the next result.

For Swiatek, the tournament is over. The official US Open report states that she will complete a calendar year without a major title for the first time since 2021. It also places her Toronto title against a season in which she had not reached another final before that run. The New York defeat therefore confirms an uneven season rather than creating one by itself.

Looking ahead

Zheng’s next match is a quarter-final against Rybakina, who beat Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 later on Monday. The match offers a direct contrast between a qualifier carrying six rounds of New York work and the No. 2 seed.

Swiatek’s next tournament was not confirmed in the official post-match report, so there is no responsible case for guessing at her schedule. What is known is that her US Open run ended in the fourth round and her next major opportunity will come in a new season.

The numbers from Monday are enough. Five games behind. Seven games won in a row. Two sets completed. Zheng turned a near-lost opener into a straight-sets win.
